30 Days of Treasure Hunting! - DAY 23 - Jess Granger!

There's still one week left to enter...

My guest today is author Jess Granger!

Jess Granger grew up in the middle of the San Joaquin valley in the dead center of California, close enough to visit "cool" too far out in the middle of nowhere to "be cool." She still loves home and her California farm girl upbringing. Now she lives all over the place as a military spouse. Currently she has landed in Ohio, but who knows what the future will bring. She lives with her hubby, two kids, two cats and an all-American mutt-dog named Jake. When not writing, Jess likes birdwatching, making beer, writing slightly naughty haiku and posting them on Twitter, and growing butterfly gardens.

Jess's upcoming release in May from Berkley Sensation is BEYOND THE SHADOWS:

A man of deception. A woman of justice. Can their fragile trust be strong enough to prevent a war?

Commander Yara knows perfect leadership requires perfect control and discipline. She has spent years living without the distraction of caring for anything—or anyone. It’s a sacrifice she’s willing to make. Yara has honed herself into the perfect heir to the Azralen throne, but a bloody coup could destroy everything she’s worked so hard for. She must return home to prevent war. Unfortunately the only ship available belongs to an Earthlen trader with no regard for authority—especially hers.

Cyn is a rebel, driven to protect those suffering at the hands of the Elite leaders of Azra. Using his alias to manipulate the lovely but icy commander onto his ship, he has to keep her from Azra long enough to ignite the revolution. But when he awakens a vibrant and feeling woman beneath that hard exterior, he gets more than he bargained for—love. He must find a way to convince Yara to join him, before they get caught in a web of deception that could tear their world apart.

Today Jess is giving away a signed copy of BEYOND THE RAIN. Simply answer this question: What is Tuz?

Welcome, Jess!

Some of my favorite characters in books are the pets. I've had a lot of fun creating fuzzy and sometimes robotic sidekicks for my main characters. Whether they're serving as comic relief, the heroes in their own right, or troublemakers, I love a good pet.

What are the most entertaining pet characters you've seen in a book?

Tuz is a black and gray cat. One might even say Tuz was Yara's cat, but can a cat really ever be owned?

Some pet characters that stick out in my mind are Daisy the 1/2 mastif 1/2 pitbull mix from Beauty and the Badge by Julie Miller and "Belly" the cat from A Marriage-Minded Man by Karen Templeton.

Hi Jess :)
The most entertaining pets I've read have been Linda Wisdom's sentient fuzzy bunny slippers with sharp teeth, Fluff and Puff, in her HEX series.

Hi Jess!
oh, it's great to see you here - your books sound great and they are both on my whislist...I especially like the cover of Beyond of Shadows *sigh*

Tuz is a cat with black and gray fur - Tuz seems to be more than a cat...very interesting.
honestly, I can't remember a pet in a book...

have a great day,
Ina

the dog Lassie
the horse Black Beauty

Tuz is a lock of tuft of hair but is also:

An enormous feline strutted out from behind a bench in the corner. It twitched its large tufted ears while its dark coat shifted over its chunky build. It was the type of cat that could take down prey five times its size, and for this cat, that equaled a small hippopotamus. Black and grey fur; belongs to Yara.

Tuz is a gray and black cat.

There is one pet character that makes me laugh so hard that I cry.

It's "Simon's Cat" by Simon Tofield. There are some cartoons on Youtube which you must see. OMG, I'm laughing now just thinking of it!

Tuz is an overweight black and gray feline who spends quite a bit of time with Yara :)

One entertaining pet character is George, a large Great Dane (is there any other kind?) from Debra Salonen's Love, by George--he was quite a character unto himself!

Ditto on the "Simon's Cat" Youtube videos...they're hilarious! Another notable cat is RK from the Acorna series by Anne McCaffrey--his initials stand for roadkill (lol) and he turns out to be a Makahomian Temple Cat.

I'm laughing thing of a dog in a movie that I love....Turner and Hootch??? At least that is how I think is was spelled. Anyway, I fell in love with that licking slobbering pooch.

I also have to laugh when I remember my favorite TV animal (beside Lassie, of course)...it was Mr. Ed.....of course. (those of you to young to remember won't get it).

I love animals included in stories. They are special and those that love them are even more special!!!

I LOVE pets in books! Some of my very fav's are actually written by Karen Robards ~~ she writes suspense. Have you ever read Night Magic? The whole book is built around her cat, Puff The Magic Dragon. Love it!! I love the way she writes the hero's reactions to the heroines pets. And JAK's Dust Bunnies ~~ I want one!! I think pets add so much to a characters depth!

Thanks for commenting everyone. sorry I was gone for the weekend and unable to sneak a peek at the thread.

For the record, I loved Maggie from an old Julie Kenner novel called "The Cat's Fancy." She was the heroine of the story. LOL

Tuz is a black and gray cat.

I remember the hero in Catherine Coulter's Rosehaven having an amusing pet ferret that traveled in his pocket. His presence provided a insight tovthe hero's compassion for animals.
