In-Cog-Nito
Yup, that's me. Incognito. Hiding out in my revision cave. I've come up for air just long enough to let you know I'm still alive. I think. (I hope!)
Nothing new to report on the writing front. Just hoping to get through these revisions in the next week or so so I can get back to Shane & Hailey's story. I'm really starting to get into those two.
If you're around on Saturday, hop over to the Bradford Bunch. I'm guest blogging there. Still have no clue on what though. ;) Which reminds me I need to come up with a topic and get that article written.
Oh! And I'm back on my promotion bandwagon. Thinking, thinking, always thinking. What's the most effective promotional tool you've ever seen a writer use? Websites, blogs, bookmarks, myspace, book signings, book trailers...other ideas? I'm curious what's caught your attention as both a writer and a reader. Several years ago at the Reno RWA convention, Kresley Cole gave out "sexy water" in the goodie room. (At least that's what my good friend Piper called it). Basically bottled water with Kresley's sexy historical book cover as the label. I thought that was clever and different from the "standard" bookmarks other authors left out. Piper did too. She kept that water bottle for I-don't-know-how-long and kept rewashing it and reusing it. Every month she brought it to our RWA meeting. Now that's effective marketing in my opinion.

Sounds like you are blasting away at the revisions.
I don't know what is the best promotional tool. I know most of the "paper" promotions- bookmarks, covers and such usually get tossed. But I still have little post-it notes with Lisa Jackson's book covers on them. I use them to put in my purse for notes. I have pens from various authors. I have my own pens and followed your advice for Nationals. Look for a highlighter with my name on it. ;)
Right now I'm trying to come up with something to give to the people who attended my workshop.
If I wasn't flying, I'd give them all a book. I may still.
I'm not much help. In the two yers I've been published I still am not sure what works the best. I have more people coming to my blog and website- but I think that's from all the online chats I do.
Wish I were more help.
Aw, my sexy water bottle from Kresley; I miss that thing. (pout, pout) Yeah, I loved that fun promo tool and I did have it for a really long time. :)
What's funny is... Now, I have almost every one of Kresley's books and that particular "sexy water" was when she was promoting "If You Dare", which I just finished last night and I didn't even remember that the sexy water was for that particular book. I started reading Kresley's paranormal series first. LOL
So hey, I'd say go for sexy, intriguing water bottles for your books. Worked for Kresley and she's awesome! :) I promise to carry your water bottle around for a VERY LONG TIME if you give me one. LOL
Good luck with your revisions and stuff. :) It's just so cool that you HAVE to do revisions!!! You know what I mean?!!
That is a great idea. When my time comes, I'll have to think of something good. Or maybe I'll copy what you do. ;)
I like pens, but now I have a ton of them. Little notebooks or post-its always come in handy and probably don't cost much. I have a Lisa Jackson cover over blank notebook pages on my desk right now.
Post it notes are a good idea. I think it needs to be something a person will want to hang onto and use several times. I heard someone did a chip-clip one time. Kinda weird, but I knew I'd keep it.
All the bag stuffers I get at conferences, I toss. I browse through them once then recycle them. I keep the post its. But it's annoying if there's no room left to write on them. I'd prefer something skinny across the top or palely in the background so I could still write on it.
I think book trailers are cool but a waste of money. I avoid myspace and facebook. A virtual blog tour is good. Jordan Dane did one before her release last month. I was stumbling across her everywhere.
